ABOUT · WHY WE EXIST

It started with a sanctuary

A studio that was always going to happen someday, until an animal sanctuary needed a website and someday became now.

Tancho, a brown-and-white paint horse with one blue eye, standing in the barn in his halter.

THE STORY

Someday, sort of

Mister Fishie always wanted his own studio. He also has a full-time web development job, a farm full of opiniated animals, and a marriage he loves to keep happy. A steady paycheck is a wonderful thing, so "someday" remains a someday.

Then came Chaotic Serendipity Sanctuary, the nonprofit he co-founded and serves as Vice President. Building its website meant building tools: an accessibility toolbar, an image resizer, a navigation module, and more. Each one solved a real problem on a real site.

Which raised an obvious question. If he could use them, why couldn't everyone else? Chaotic Fish Design is the answer: a place to share those tools, try new ideas, and show the work. Where it leads is anyone's guess. Maybe a studio of his own someday. For now, the critters are happy with the arrangement.

WHAT THIS PLACE IS

Three things in one

THE TOOLBOX

Free extensions

Built for the sanctuary site and shared with everyone. If we can use them, so can you.

THE SANDBOX

A place to experiment

Where new ideas get tried, broken and fixed before they go anywhere important.

THE PORTFOLIO

The work, in one place

Every tool, demo and design, with changelogs to show how each one got there.

PAY IT FORWARD

Everything here is free

The studio doesn't sell anything and doesn't accept payment. If one of our tools saved you an afternoon and you'd like to say thanks with real money, please send it to the sanctuary instead. It goes to the animals who started all of this.
